Residents of Salem apartment complex frustrated with poor living conditions

Salem, Virginia. – Some residents of The View at 777 in Salem are frustrated.

“They never answer or there is never anyone in the office. They can never answer your questions. You email, you never get a response,” said Jay Butterworth, who lives there.

They say their health and safety concerns remain unaddressed at the apartment complex. Todd Smith, whose mother lives in The View, says he recently found a dead bat and possibly bad feces inside the ventilation system.

“When we found a bat in his bedroom the other day, in his laundry room, we started to investigate a bit and found that all of his vents were full of stuff,” Smith said.

Butterworth also had ventilation issues. He said he went unanswered until he hired a lawyer.

“The lawyer said, ‘I want some fresh air coming in, I don’t want it coming in from the attic. I want him off the roof, in the fresh air. No animal droppings running through the attic.

A family says they called the office for days after the ceiling collapsed over their shower. But that wasn’t their only problem.

“There’s mold in there, obviously you can see it with the hole in the wall, you can see it now. And there’s a lot of water damage,” said Alyssa Conner, another resident. .

Tenants say they are also struggling with electrical problems, delays in repairs to air conditioning units and a drastic increase in rent. They just want to make sure their voices are heard.

“Go inside, listen to their complaints, solve the problems and fix them. It’s under new management…all of that should have been taken care of when they started running the place,” Smith added.

The resort is owned by Greenbrier Management.

10 News has contacted the local Salem office and Williamsburg headquarters and we are still awaiting a response.
